West Japan De La Riva Cup

So ive been studying in Japan this summer.
I'm also training at a local jiu-jitsu dojo (Ohmi Dojo satelite school of Tani Jiu-jitsu). A few weeks ago I competed at the West Japan De La Riva cup in C-class Pena (~67.4kg) grappling. Annnd i got my ass handed to me haha. (over here theres no rules where a bluebelts must be in intermediate or above etc. so C class is mostly blue belts, B class purples). but my team mate won C class absolute division. also lots of throwing and shit.. cuz you can be a judo blackbelt but still compete as a bjj white belt.

Me on left, team mate on right that won absolute C-class grappling (yea he won absolute as a bantam weight..)

peaceee, happy training to everyone this summer!

FAQ for new members

Practices are run in a friendly informal atmosphere. We start with a light warmup/stretching, followed by techniques/drills. Then open sparring to practice your techniques live. There is no striking so sparring is safe, just remember to tap out whenever you feel pain.

1) Who can join?
Any UVA student/faculty/staff (as long as you can get into Mem gym you can train with us!).

2) Is it okay if I have never done this before?
Of course, many of our members have never trained jiu-jitsu or any form martial art until they got to UVA. Forms of grappling (judo, wrestling, sambo etc.) are a great advantage.

3) How much does it cost?
Club membership is free. Those that are interested come out and try, there is no obligation.

4) What should I wear/Do I need a "gi"?
For your first time something comfortable along the lines of shorts and tshirts is a good idea. Some prefer under-armor type shirts.
For those continuing training its recommended that guys get protective cups and gis. Gis are the thick uniforms worn to aid in teaching jiu-jitsu techniques.

5) Should I join if I'm a girl?
Sure, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu makes a great base for self defence. Our club also runs self defense seminars for Sororities as well.

6) Is it okay to start late? What if I can't make a practice?
You can start whenever you want during the semester. Practices are very informal so just come when you can. We understand everyone is a busy student so not being able to make a practice is absolutely fine.

First Post!

First post of our new blog~
Hope you all are having a great summer!
Good luck to those that are training over the summer. For those that are interested in starting jiujitsu this fall, we look forward to seeing you.

Exact practice times is still pending at this time. But we should be getting our usual 2 times a week practice times at Memorial (Mem) Gym.
